(CNN) – It’s rare that two media watchdogs – one on the left and one on the right – ever agree when it comes to assessing coverage on the cable news outlets.

But both the conservative Newsbusters and liberal Media Matters are aiming fire at Fox News’ Geraldo Rivera and Judge Andrew Napolitano for recently suggesting the third building to fall on September 11, 2001 – 7 World Trade Center- may have collapsed for reasons beside the widely held belief that fire from the two World Trade Center towers nearby was the ultimate cause.

In a segment that aired on his program more than two weeks ago, Rivera reported on those who claim the building’s collapse was more consistent with that which would occur from explosive devices.

“I’m certainly much more open-minded about it than I was,” Rivera said of the alternate possibility for the building’s fall.

Days later Napolitano – a legal analyst for Fox – said of the theory:

“It’s hard for me to believe that [7 World Trade Center] came down by itself. I was gratified to see Geraldo Rivera investigating it. I’m gratified to see the people across the border interested.

“I think 20 years from now, people will look at 9/11 the way they look at the assassination of JFK today,” he added, in an interview with radio host Alex Jones. “It couldn’t possibly have been done the way the government told us.”

In a post on its Web site Tuesday, Newsbusters said the suggestion lacked any common sense and amounted to “moral repugnance.”

“Just so Fox is clear about the people whom they’ve given soapboxes, Geraldo and the Judge are apparently unconvinced by physics, common sense, and the simple human decency of their elected officials,” wrote Newsbuster’s Lachlan Markay.

Meanwhile, Media Matters Eric Hananoki wrote: “Napolitano’s belief in 9-11 conspiracy theories may make things awkward with his Fox News colleagues – especially Glenn Beck – who have denounced 9-11 conspiracy theories and those associating themselves with anyone making them.”

A federal report in 2008 determined fires at the World Trade Center site ultimately spread to 7 World Trade Center and weakened critical floor beams and structural columns of the nearly-50 story building, leading to its collapse. The building– which housed offices of the Central Intelligence Agency, the Secret Service and the Giuliani administration’s emergency response center – was completely evacuated at the time of its collapse.

Fox News did not respond to CNN’s request for comment.

Responding to a series of hit pieces by self-declared “media watchdog” website Media Matters, a public advocacy group representing 9/11 family members has demanded an apology.

NYCCAN, the group responsible for airing ads urging an investigation into the destruction of World Trade Center Building 7, has issued a statement applauding FOX News hosts Andrew Napolitano and Geraldo Rivera for their fair treatment of the subject and rebuking Media Matters and The Huffington Post for their biased coverage.

An excerpt from the statement:

On November 29, Media Matters published an article entitled, “9/11 Victim Families Criticize Judge Napolitano Comments,” in which four 9/11 family members were quoted as attacking Judge Napolitano, without a single mention of the more than one-hundred 9/11 family members from NYC CAN who share Napolitano’s skepticism. One family member quoted in the article went as far as to say, “Anybody who talks about that is obviously not a family member and just trying to stir the pot and cause controversy.”

We who lost loved ones on that day cannot stand idly by as our honest search for the truth about their death is trampled upon. We demand that Media Matters apologize for its unfair, irresponsible and injurious coverage of this deeply sensitive issue.

Media Matters, which claims to “monitor, analyze and correct” right wing “misinformation” in the US media, has regularly portrayed 9/11 truth as a right-wing extremist cause.

Media Matters is the recent recipient of a one million dollar donation from financier George Soros.

__________________

NEW YORK CITY — Today, the New York City Coalition for Accountability Now (NYC CAN), a group of family members of those killed in the 9/11 attacks, issued the following statement:

We who lost our loved ones on September 11, 2001 vigorously applaud Judge Andrew Napolitano and Geraldo Rivera for the courage they have shown in publicly questioning the official claim that the collapse of World Trade Center Building 7 was due to fire.

In the week since Judge Napolitano aired his views on Building 7, many voices in the media have singled him out for attack while conveniently ignoring the sequence of events that led to his revelation and the overwhelming evidence that validates his concerns.

This past month, on TV screens across the New York Metropolitan Area, millions of viewers have been seeing footage of Building 7′s collapse for the first time ever. This is because we took it upon ourselves to produce and appear in a TV ad to draw attention to the fact that more than 1,300 architects and engineers publicly join us in challenging the official explanation that Building 7 came down due to fire. We were fortunate enough that Geraldo Rivera saw our ad and invited our representatives to appear on Geraldo At Large. There they presented the irrefutable evidence that Building 7′s collapse could not have resulted from fire as the government claims. Geraldo Rivera then appeared on Freedom Watch with Judge Napolitano to discuss our campaign and express his doubts about Building 7. The following week, Judge Napolitano courageously voiced his own opinions on this matter.

However, you would not know anything about our position if you are getting your information from outlets like Media Matters and the Huffington Post.

And we call upon other voices in the media to follow the lead of Geraldo Rivera and Judge Napolitano, who have so courageously begun to question our government’s scientifically bogus explanation for Building 7′s collapse.

Fox Business host Andrew Napolitano is drawing condemnation from colleague Eric Bolling for his belief that the government lied about the attacks on 9/11.

On the November 23 edition of The Alex Jones Show, Napolitano said that it’s “hard for me to believe that” World Trade Center building 7 “came down by itself” – a central tenet of 9/11 conspiracy theories – and claimed that “twenty years from now, people will look at 9/11 the way we look at the assassination of JFK today. It couldn’t possibly have been done the way the government told us.”

Napolitano’s remarks were posted on Bolling’s Facebook page, which prompted Bolling to respond to one commenter yesterday:

Bobby… I did research.. all the funerals I attended. The comforting of families of my co-workers and the fundraisers I did for the first responders. I watched the plane fly into my place of work… take this “truther” crap and shove it..

Bolling – whose Fox Business show airs after Napolitano’s – wrote a separate post about the topic this morning, in which referenced Napolitano and called 9/11 Trutherism “B.S.” that is “hurtful to those of us who lost loved ones & co-workers. Go elsewhere.” From Bolling’s November 26 Facebook post:

Judge is a very smart man & great friend.. on this, however, I know more than him, Geraldo, Alex Jones. I was one of a handful who had access to the site immediately after the terror attacks. I spent the next seven years there..feet from the burning rubble. I KNOW what happened. Radical Muslims killed my friends. NOT MY GOVT! Your B.S. is hurtful to those of us who lost loved ones & co-workers. Go elsewhere.

When Media Matters drew attention to Napolitano’s 9/11 Truth views, we noted that his position contrasts sharply with his Fox News colleagues, who have condemned 9/11 Truthers and those associated with them. Will other Fox Newsers like Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly and Brian Kilmeade condemn Napolitano as they have with other truthers?

UPDATE: On his Facebook page this afternoon, Bolling now denies that he was attacking Napolitano. Bolling states that “the liberal media took my response to a comment here and tried (but failed) to make it look like an attack on The Judge.”

Judge Andrew Napolitano has taken his firebrand libertarian show, Freedom Watch, to the big leagues, anchoring the most expensive real estate on the Fox Business Network– and it took less than a month of free market values and government distrust for Keith Olbermann to be calling for his dismissal. The issue? Napolitano really doesn’t trust the government, whether it comes to taxes, social programs, or, uh, who was really behind 9/11.

Napolitano visited controversial radio host Alex Jones‘ program recently and– not for the first time– suggested that the September 11th attacks “couldn’t possibly have been done the way the government told us.” Olbermann doesn’t take any particular issue with the comment, noting with some apathy, “I don’t have to agree with him, you don’t have to disagree with him.” In fact, Olbermann doesn’t even give Napolitano a coveted “Worsts” medal– that honor goes to his boss, Roger Ailes, for not firing Napolitano.

So why does Olbermann want someone whose comments he doesn’t mind to lose his job, which happens to be hosting a show in the same genre and in the same time slot as Olbermann? For the sake of consistency. “Put your outrage where you money is,” he told Ailes, noting that other Fox News personalities like Glenn Beck, Bill O’Reilly, and Sean Hannity had called for Van Jones to be fired and Imam Faisal Abdul Rauf to lose his license to open an Islamic center in Lower Manhattan for similar comments. Imam Rauf wasn’t even the source of his own offensive comments– it was an underling. Since others on Fox News criticized these individuals for 9/11 “truth”-related comments, Olbermann concludes, Napolitano merits the same treatment.

The difference, of course, between individuals like Jones and Rauf and television personalities like Judge Napolitano is that the latter has no direct influence on government or policy. The job conservatives were so upset to see Jones hold gave him the power to advice the nation’s chief executive. Imam Rauf– knee-deep in controversy for issues having nothing to do with trutherism– is in charge of a major downtown Manhattan project. Judge Napolitano, on the other hand, is paid for his opinions. He is not paid to generate policy or execute projects based on those opinions– his only responsibility is to be interesting and, for the picky cable news viewer, consistent. There is nothing inconsistent about someone whose philosophical foundation is distrust in the government to express unease with certain statements the government has made. To Olbermann’s credit, he takes no issue with Napolitano himself. But to dump Napolitano in the same boat as Van Jones is to thoroughly misunderstand the arguments that Beck, O’Reilly, et al made during the “Czar” saga. So long as Napolitano doesn’t find himself in the President’s cabinet, there is little reason for his colleagues to demand a pink slip.

Fox Business host and Fox News senior judicial analyst Andrew Napolitano revealed yesterday that he doubts the US government’s account of the 9/11 attacks. Referring to the rapid, symmetrical destruction of World Trade Center building 7, Napolitano told radio host Alex Jones:

“It’s hard for me to believe that it came down by itself…I am gratified to see that people across the board are interested. I think twenty years from now, people will look at 9/11 the way we look at the assassination of JFK today. It couldn’t possibly have been done the way the government told us.”

Napolitano recently discussed WTC 7 on his “Freedom Watch” program with fellow FOX host Geraldo Rivera and has also hosted Anthony Shaffer to discuss the Able Danger cover up.

The news of Napolitano’s 9/11 statements was first reported in a <a hrefhttp://mediamatters.org/blog/201011240019">derogatory piece by Media Matters and then picked up by the staunchly anti-9/11 truth Huffington Post – perhaps in an attempt to make FOX look worse. As one commenter on the Huffington Post story noted “What’s interesting is that this article centers on a ‘FOX Host’ and not the families, engineers and architects requesting a new investigation.”
