Foreword by Cindy Sheehan

After years of profound involvement in the US antiwar movement, I can now sniff out partisan political frauds, and the author of this memoir, Jon Gold, is not one of them.

A partisan political fraud latches on to an issue or cause or cause celebré until that thing or person is not popular anymore, then he/she bails out at the first opportunity.

A person who really cares about humanity realizes that the cesspool of partisanship creates and/or fosters the problems for pure political gain. Jon Gold is one of these people.

When people were killed on 9/11, Jon Gold was at first a Fox News-aholic who wanted revenge for those killings―but only because he cared about the people who were killed and their families. Now, through self-education and mentors, whom he generously acknowledges throughout this book―he realized that we were all lied to on 9/11, and he has worked diligently to highlight the truth because he still cares about the people who were killed on that day, their families, and the people who are still being killed because of our country’s reaction to the attack.

My oldest child, Casey, was just one of those victims of the insane response to the attacks on 9/11 and I became famous and infamous because of my protests against the wars and the Bush regime―well, after I became notorious, I began to become literally bombarded by people and their causes because they believed that I had a platform, megaphone, or soapbox to highlight these causes.

Some of those causes were absurd―from the man who was convinced that Stephen King killed John Lennon, and if I would only help him expose that, world peace would ensue (he actually jumped on the hood of my car in Berkeley once) to the man who wanted me to come to Arizona to be a character witness for his friend who was accused of killing a cow. I kid you not!

The most prevalent of these people who bombarded me, though, were the 9/11 “Truthers.” I was harassed all over the world by them and I swear if one more person asked me if I saw Loose Change I was going to forget my pacifism and punch him (it was always a him) in the face. The sad thing about this harassment was that I never believed the so-called official story of 9/11 and would have tended to be an ally to these people, but they were so rude and pushy. And, I didn’t feel that I had the time or the inclination to wade through the stacks of information that they tried to force on me―True Confession time, I left a lot of that material in cabs or garbage cans.

I was sincerely beginning to loathe 9/11 “Truthers” with a passion I reserved for the U.S. Empire. The only thing that saved them from my total loathing was the fact that I realized that they were usually well-meaning and had good intentions, but I was, and still am, turned off by the “hologram,” “laser-beam,” “Israel was totally responsible” crowd that really make the movement seem insane.

I don’t remember when Jon Gold first started messaging me at the MySpace thing, but I remember he began by apologizing for the people in the movement who harassed me mercilessly―which got my attention. Here was a “Truther” (Jon hates that label) that wasn’t attacking me for my “cowardice” in not publicly saying that 9/11 was an “inside job.” Well, of course it was, but I (and neither does anybody else, no matter how sure they seem) know how far inside it went.

Jon Gold never demanded that I watch any movies, (although he helped a very good one get financing), read any books, or publicly announce anything using my platform. Gradually, my anger at the truth movement began to fade and I was able to do things like publicly support NYCCAN and its push for a ballot measure to have a new investigation of 9/11―and I have become friends with others in the movement and, through Jon, met Bob McIlvaine, whose son, Bobby, was killed on 9/11, and has become another tireless activist for justice.

Since our MySpace beginnings, Jon and I have become close friends. We have organized events in DC as members of Peace of the Action (POTA) and even were arrested together in front of the White House and we very romantically shared the first ever “stay away order” from said White House with about four other activists and went on trial for that arrest and were both exonerated.

9/11 truth is still not my “thing,” but because of Jon Gold, I am open to it and don’t have a knee-jerk reaction (which means I used to want to knee any Truther that approached me in the male parts―kidding―I do that sometimes) to anyone in the movement.

Jon is kind of young to be writing a memoir, so this is just Part One of a long and, we all hope, productive career of activism and a life filled with love, justice and peace.

It’s true! The Democratic Platform for the state of Colorado is the first major party in the US to adopt a resolution for a new investigation into the official story of the events surrounding 9/11.

It started in 2004 when I, a complete novice in political processes, decided to participate in my precinct caucus in order to try to make a difference here in Colorado.1 The night before, I learned that the caucus is also a time to bring policy resolutions for consideration. Hurriedly, I wrote a resolution for a new, independent investigation into 9/11, figuring that here is an opportunity, at least, to educate a few more people. To my surprise, my precinct caucus neighbors voted for it!

The next step was to get it passed at the county level: the Denver County Assembly and Convention. To do this, I needed to get 10% of the attendees to sign a petition – another chance to educate more people! I needed 200 signatures, which I managed to get with the spontaneous help of a couple of other 9/11 truth activists. Now I could present this resolution to the Assembly, at the end of a long hard day, which wound up being attended by about 100 of the most serious participants.

Managing to transcend my considerable stage fright, and fearing I might be tarred and feathered, I read the full resolution aloud. The call for a vote came. To my shock, the resolution passed by 98%!

Discovering that the next step was the Colorado Platform Committee, I attended that meeting. Other dedicated activists were there as well, trying to figure out this mysterious process. (We could attend and comment, but not vote.) We were stunned to see that the Committee did not even have copies of the passed county platforms by which to determine what should be included at the state level. They were just going to decide unilaterally what they wanted on the state platform!

I firmly but politely confronted the chair of the committee about this. He replied testily, “We’re doing the best we can!” (I.e. sit down and shut up!) I replied back as testily, “No, you are not! Democracy has just flown out the window!”

Those more politically savvy than I informed me that the Democratic Party is controlled from the top down. What people want at the grassroots is not welcome, and when controversial resolutions are passed, they can be mysteriously removed at the state level. The State Platform Committee balks at including any resolutions not supported by the party’s presidential candidate – just the opposite of how a representative democracy is supposed to work.

Not to be deterred, in the months following, a few of the citizens who had been educated by our Colorado 9/11 Visibility speaking events joined the Colorado Democratic Platform Committee. In 2008, these people informed other committee members about the need for a new 9/11 investigation. In this same year, other Colorado citizens presented resolutions in their caucuses and county assemblies across the state. This time, they actually reached the Colorado Democratic Platform Committee, and, lo and behold, the following resolution was passed:

“We hereby declare that the investigations into the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the illegal invasion of Iraq, Abramoff and other lobbyists, the hurricane Katrina response, and other major issues were inadequate and warrant review.”

Not at all unhappy with this, several of us proceeded to try for a stronger statement in 2010, beginning with the precinct level. At my precinct caucus, there was a backlash waiting, and I was unsuccessful. Other activists, however, were successful in getting their resolutions passed at precinct and county levels. To my utter surprise, the Colorado Platform Committee kept the previous resolution and added another to the 2010 Colorado Democratic Platform:

“Whereas many disturbing facts were consciously ignored by the 9/11 Commission; Be it resolved, therefore, that the CDP calls for the establishment of a truly independent Grand Jury and public investigation into these and other anomalies in order to find the truth of the September 11, 2001 attacks, so that we have a greater probability of preventing attacks of this nature in the future.”

Now understanding the controlling and top-down nature of the Democratic Party, I fully expect a backlash, and realize that the grassroots desire for a new investigation into 9/11 will likely never be considered by the Democratic National Committee (unlike the Green Party [2]). However, activists in any state with the caucus system [3] can use this political process to at least educate our fellow citizens. It is a rare opportunity in which the audience is right there waiting for us to speak our truth!

[1] There are two methods by which states choose their delegates and pass resolutions for the national conventions: the caucus and the primary. Caucuses are simply neighborhood meetings, open to all registered voters of the party, in which delegates and resolutions are chosen for the county conventions and assemblies. The states that have primaries do not have this grassroots advantage. They are open to all registered voters, and voting is done through a secret ballot as in general elections.

[2] In 2004, the National Green Party called for an independent commission, with full participation of surviving family members, to investigate the government’s handling of 9/11 and information leading up to the attacks. To date, this is the only national political party to support a new, independent investigation.

[3]States with the caucus system are Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, North Dakota, Iowa, Nevada, Nebraska, Washington, Maine, Wyoming, Texas, and Utah.

The two clips posted below are from Alan Colmes’ radio show. Listen to how a reasonable and friendly approach leaves no room for argument and builds a bridge with the host. Colmes in the past has had Alex Jones on his radio show. The host has dealt with members of the We Are Change group “confronting” him (chasing him down the road, shouting, calling him names and accusing him of a being controlled.) Considering both of these interactions with people who supposedly represent the the 9/11 truth movement, it is quite possible that Colmes simply hasn’t been exposed to some of the more reasonable and basic questions about the official story. Colmes has most certainly been exposed to some very radical groups who have perhaps simply failed to present him with information he can relate to and still maintain his position.

These two calls to Colmes only convinced him to agree that he would be willing to investigate 9/11 under limited circumstances. However, the most important point both calls show is that if those who want to spread the truth about 9/11 take a respectful and thoughtful approach – to “discuss” rather than “confront” – there will be no room to argue and minds will open.

Many media representatives have shows where they allow open or semi-open formats for call-ins. Formats like these are an incredible opportunity for us to encourage media coverage of the truth about 9/11. Try calling in to a show on a regular basis (it sometimes only takes 5-15 minutes on hold). This form of public discussion when carried out in a respectful, polite and mature manner is the key for spreading 9/11 truth to the masses.

Please note that in the first phone call, the activist being referenced is the 2nd caller in the clip. The first caller actually shows a perfect example of the wrong way to try and talk to a radio show host.

According the group’s facebook page, “Mainstream media networks have barely touched the surface of what happened… Through their negligence, they have made a mockery of the unanswered questions held by the victims’ families, and greatly dishonored the 3,000 people who died on 9/11. This must change.”

The group is urging those who agree to join the boycott, during which participants will rely only on independent media sources for their news. On their page, the group suggests several alternatives to mainstream news, including Raw Story and Information Clearinghouse.

Jonathan Reynolds, one of the boycott organizers, says “The boycott is very open-ended. Anyone can participate as long as they would like to. Television is a trivial sacrifice once we realize how much we don’t need it.”

The organizers of the boycott make several demands of the corporate media, including “giving sufficient air time to the September 11th Advocates and members of the Family Steering Committee who called for a new investigation as a result of the shortcomings of the Commission.”

A similar but unrelated campaign, called Unplug The Signal, is encouraging the public to do away with TV altogether. Activist artist Nathan Janes says the campaign “draws attention to the gross manipulation of reality that is broadcast by the six major corporations controlling the content of television.”

The Mainstream Media Boycott for 9/11 Justice starts on September 11, 2010 at 12 am.
